South Tech & Heartland Humane Society Work Together

Vet Tech Partners with Heartland Humane Society

The students in the Veterinary Assistant Program at South Technical High School gain valuable hands on experience through our relationship with the Heartland Humane Society. Through this, our students receive hands on experience unmatched by the majority of programs at this level. Because of their hard work in the 2010-2011 academic school year alone, the students have taken care of and helped find loving forever homes for one hundred and forty lab animals!

Heartland graciously allows the Vet Tech program to house rescued dogs and cats to use as lab animals. Students receive lab animals in all kinds of conditions with various types of health problems. The students learn to diagnose the animals and plan their course of treatment. Under the direction of the teachers, the students then carry out the treatment plan. Many animals are also cared for after spaying and neutering so the students learn after surgery care.

Many of the students go beyond what they do in the classroom. They volunteer many hours of time for further care of the animals, and to volunteer with Heartland at adoption events. As members of FFA, they receive credit and service hours for this work.

South Tech Welding Student Brings Home Bronze Medal from National Championships

Robert Patzius
Congratulations go out to recent graduate, Robert Patzius on his bronze medal in the Welding Sculpture Contest at the SkillsUSA National Championships held in Kansas City, MO the week of June 20th-June 25th. Robert, a South Tech welding student competed with 25 other SkillsUSA welding students from across the nation in a contest that not only included a personally designed sculpture, but a notebook documenting the step by step process in producing this piece of art. Robert was also required to make a presentation to a panel of judges explaining the how his sculpture was made and what he learned from this experience. Naming his work of welding art "Autumn Inspiration," Robert began working on this project in October of 2010 using the skills taught to him by his instructor, Adam Holt. Both the sculpture and notebook were completed in time for the annual Missouri SkillsUSA State Championships this past March where Robert earned a gold medal, therefore qualifying him to represent the state of Missouri at the SkillsUSA National Championship Level. Currently, Robert attends the Missouri Welding School in Nevada, MO on a full ride scholarship. Best wishes to Robert for a bright future.

Master Gardeners work with Culinary Students

Master Gardening Group and Culinary Arts
The Culinary teachers would like to express their sincere gratitude toward the Master Gardening Group, especially Leon Zickrcik and Karen Koehnman, who shared their passion for gardening and knowledge with the students. Because the culinary industry is moving toward more locally grown foods and sustainability, there has been an increase in restaurants growing their own herbs, fruits and vegetables. The students and the Master Gardeners worked together to make sure the students learned how to grow and harvest fresh herbs.

The students so enjoyed working every week with the gardeners the many of them started their own herb gardens at home. Leon and Karen also set up guest speakers for the students. The speakers included Jan Herman who did basil and made pesto with eh students. Lil Collins introduced them to elderberries and gave each student an elderberry plant. Maxine Stone taught about mushrooms and shared her prize morels. The Espoino's taught about peppers and had the students make fresh salsa and guacamole. John Henslety discussed garlic and brought in fresh garlic bread for the students. Marilyn Claggett talked about nutrition and had the students make fresh garlic butter.

The students enjoyed going to the green house every day to gather the herbs they needed for cooking. In addition to all their valuable expertise, the Master Gardeners saved the school a lot of money this year because of the increased prices of fresh herbs. Their kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated.
